So, you have a room full of giggly
little munchkins and you have their
attention (more or less). Now what?
What can you do in the next 10
minutes that will impact their lives
for eternity? How can you most
effectively teach them truths from
God's word that will capture their
attention now and stick with them?
Their eyes are on you. Their parents
are counting on you. What do you

Three secrets that's what you have.
The three powerful secrets that will
speed them toward knowing God and
learning his Word can be expressed
using the acronym CAR.
The first letter in our CAR stands
for Content. The content that
you prepare for your class must be
appropriate for their age and
learning level and must meet them on
thier level of interest. If even a
portion of what you present is
beyond their understanding, too
simplistic, or presented in a way
that does not capture their
attention and interest, the message
wil be lost due to confusion,
distraction or boredom. Yawns may
ensue, horseplay will break out and
the moment will be lost.
To
get ideas of how to make things
interesting for them, listen to how
they talk with each other, observe
what they play with and how they
play, and then work their own
thoughts and behavior into your
stories or presentations. Just
because you have a lesson book to
teach from does not mean that you
have to follow it word for
word...get creative and watch as
your class is drawn into your
lesson.
The "A" in CAR stands for
Application. For a lesson to
truly be a lesson there has to be a
personal application that can be
made to the child's life. Getting
your class to ask themselves "how
does this apply to me?" is the
biggest challenge of all. You
already have their attention by your
great content so now is a great time
to make it interactive. Use your
knowledge of the age group you are
working with to steer the questions
and answers. Ask about specific
situations in their lives and apply
the content of the lesson to those
situations.
Finally the "R" in CAR is
Repetition. Children absolutely
love repetition as though you were
sprinkling sugar directly on their
brain...it's wonderful! Don't be
afraid to retell a particularly good
story or lesson again and again.
Vary it slightly in the telling and
they will become even more
captivated, all the while absorbing
the details. Recap the application
of a lesson week after week, digging
deeper into the lesson each time.

application, and repetition - are so
simple but so powerful to reaching a
child's heart with the word of God.
